NOTE: It looks like some of the default settings mentioned below were not set the same way in the RTM version of Exchange Server 2003.

This applies to mailboxes, public folders, and distribution lists/groups (collectively referred to as mail-enabled objects).

I tried looking this up today to verify how I think this works and didn’t really find the details that I was looking for. It's just one of these things that we don't think much about until we run into an issue that requires more research into the specific feature. SUMMARY

Depending on the circumstances, Exchange will convert an attached e-mail (this means an existing e-mail that is attached/embedded into a new e-mail) from .MSG format to .EML format. The reason for the conversion has to do with the fact that Rich Text and TNEF formats are proprietary to MS Exchange/Outlook. (more…)
