I had to replace the toilet fill valve the other week for my mother-in-law. It was a Fluidmaster 400A toilet tank fill valve and I replaced it with the same thing. That was the first time I had done any type of toilet repair and learned a few things. (more…)

OVERVIEW

I recently replaced my front porch light. There wasn't anything wrong with it; I just wanted one with a motion sensor. I went to Home Depot and first got a Hampton Bay model. The installation was pretty easy since it used the same type of rectangular mounting straps as the existing light. But the only major problem with this light was its motion sensor.  Even with the sensitivity set to high, it would not turn on the light until I was really close, which wasn't acceptable to me. Peephole / Door Viewer Installation

Today I installed a Defender Security 160 Degree Glass Lens Door Viewer - Solid Brass (model U-9983) that I purchased from Home Depot. They also sell the Schlage brand, but I didn't want that brand because Schlage uses plastic for the lens. Defender Security uses glass (at least in the model I got). I read a few how-to articles on installing a door viewer and thought I was prepared and that it would be easy. It actually ended up taking ~45 minutes by the time I was done cleaning up.
